NME front cover
In this issue the magazine is about Paramore because they are the main band they have consontrated on, also they talk about other bands and singers in this issue but they are mainly cnsontrating on Paramore. The Target audience for this issue if the NME magazine is people that are interested in Paramore or are justgenrally drawn in by this magazine front cover.
The Layout overall is very good and clear and is well arranged, the text all stands out d the picture in the middle of the page stands out very well and nothing on the cover is over crowded, the use of white space, at the top of the page behind the title and writing is all clear so nothing interfears with the text and the use of the white space makes all the text stand out very well and also it makes the text more clearer to read. The type of Typography that has been used on this poster is, sans serif for the title and they use this kind of font because they want to grab peoples eyes and draws people in to read this issue, the font that has been used for the Paramore text is big and bold aswel an they use this effect because they want people to see this text straight after they have read the title and hope that people will be interested in what they see. The other text on this cover is all bold but a smaller font size because they want people to see the text but they dont want the people seeing this issue to be draw to them instead of the titles. The Hierarchy the issue is trying to achieve is to make your eyes to read down the page, they achieve this by having a bit of text at the top of the page and then a bit under that text is some more text and its like this down the page. The photography of the piture is very good because the way the band are set out for the photo, the woman at the front of the photo is giving us direct eye contact the guys in the background are all looking at the camara but are all looking in different ways at the camara. The women in the front is almost standing straight on giving us the feeling shes right infront of me, the guy on the left is looking over his right shoulder at me, the guy next to him is standing slanted trying to get into view behind the guy on the left, the guy on the far right is standing faceing the left but has turned his head to face the camara. The guy next to him is just standing there casually looking straight in front of him. The lighting on this cover photo looks like its coming from directly in front of the camera to their faces, you get this impression because all the faces have really bright faces like the light rays are reflecting off them. This works really well because the whole picture is lit up really well. The colour scheme for this issue is black to cstch peoples eyes when the magazine is on the shelf in a shop behind others, also there is red for the title of the magazine its bright red because it has to stand out in front of every other bit of text because its the most important bit of text on the page it tells everyone what the magazine is called. The name of the band that is featured on the cover is in pink but its not as important as the title so it doesn't need to take the attention of the title so the pink as been made more of a darker pink. On the cover the rest of the text is white, they used white to stand out because they have a black background and the white text will stand out really well and you will be able to read the text very clearly. The kind of graphic Ornamentations that are on this issue is a slanted box at the top left corner that is black with white writing, this is used to give people a little bit of information about whats inside the magazine, also they have used a white circle in the top right hand corner which also has information inside saying in 6 words about something thats inside the magazine. The Institutional Information that is on this page is a barcode at the bottom of the page, also within that bar code is a price for the issue and the date that issue was released. The photo package in this issue, there is only one big picture on the cover and the picture is of the band Paramore the main talked about band in the issue, its nice how they have used the picture in the way they have because it stands out really really well. The text on the front cover does relate to the picture shown because the text says about how many albums the band has sold and also says about people becoming a fan and asking if you will become a fan too. This issue does not include a pull quote on the cover but it does use a retorical question in the title they said "Everyone has fallen for them. Will you?". Using this question works really well with the public because it draws them in and makes them feel like the issue is talkin directly to them.
My Conclusion: This front cover did work in my opinion and the reason I say this is because overall the cover is very well laid out. Its got its point across which is to inform people about Paramore the band. Its made me feel really interested in the band and also made me want to read the whole article inside the magazine, this magazine did inform me about the band telling me how succesful they had been. This NME front cover is very different to the BBC music cover the reason I say this is different because the NME cover has a very bright use of colours and this is because they are a rock band, so the use of bright colours show they are all about fun and you get a warm feeling about this whole front cover and the BBC cover uses dull colours which shows the its a classical piece and it also shows that the women it quite serious and straight on about her work.
NME double page spread
This double page spread is about Lily allen and what people think of her and her reaction to all those critercising her, the audience for this double page spread of the NME magazine is people that like or dislike Lily allen these people will be the audience because Lily is trying to get her point back across at people that have said things about her or even have that view on her, so you can make your jugement on her after you have heard her side of all the rumours.
The layout of this double page has the title overlapping with the picture a bit and this is because the designer has tried to make the title and the picture big and bold to stand out to the public and by doing this, it gives less room on the page to work in, the picture has most of the right side on its own so you can clearly see the picture, the title on the page has a lot of the left side, the main text about Lily has the bottom quarter of the left hand side and you can see the whole double page has been thought about long and hard to make it look this clear while also getting all the information in. There has been some use of white space used on this double page spread, the use of it is all around the picture and around the main title text and also around the paragraphs of text, this gives your eyes a easy chance to be able to read this double page spread and the use of white space makes everything on the pages more spread out. The Typography that has been used for the title is big and bold the reason they have used this is because they want the title to stand out to everyone and draw people to the page, also the text in the paragraph is small so it doesnt take the attention off the title, but with the font size being small it makes it quite difficult to read it. The Hierarchy they are trying to achieve on this double page spread is to read downwards, they achieve this in the paragraphs because they but line under line under line untill there is no more and they start the next sentence next to the paragraph they have just writen, so you kinda get a donimo effect with the paragraphs. The Photography in this photo on the double page spread is mainlu trying to catch the one side of her face to improve the effect she is trying to listen to you so by lighting the one side of her face that is closest to the camara makes the impression she is really close and you can see her face really clearly, the clothes that are worn by Lily are quite bright its a red checkered top, and the effect this bright top is giving is that she wants to catch peoples eyes and be the center of attention, this also draws people into this double page spread because its bright and eye catching and that is what the pages are trying to do. Lily is standing with her hands on her hips leaning forward, with her head to the side like shes trying to listen closly to someone and that someone could be the public and what they are saying, the way shes standing with her hands on her hips are trying to suggest that she really doesnt care about anyone and what they say. The colour scheme on this page are all eye catching to draw you in. The black boxes behind the white writing make the text stand out really well and is easy to read, and then the white space behind the black text gives the same easy to read text, the bright photo draws people in to read what Lily has said about all the rumours. The graphic Ornamentations that have been used on the two pages is boxes around the title, they have used this effect because they want the title to stand out and draw the reader in, also this boxes effect gives the impression that all the letters have been cut out of other magazines. On these double pages there is a bit of Institutional Information, theres no barcodes on this double page spread because its not a front cover, there is information on this its underneith the title. The information on this double page is the two little sentences under the title that tell people reading this issue that the NME editors have gone behind the scences to talk to lilly and that is where the paragraphs of information have come from. The Photo package on these two pages is just the one big picture showing Liliy allen her self, with hust using the one picture on its own gives everyone that strong impression/idea that these two pages are all about her and no one else also you get the feeling that shes the center of attention. There is a Copy Package involved in these two pages, the text on the page does relate a lot to the image on the page, the reason the image relates to the text is because the title says about attention seeking and next to that text is a picture of her on her own in a bright red shirt and this is showing that she is trying to be the center of attention, by grabbing the readers eye. Then the rest of the text on the page is about Lily, so the picture shows people who the text is about. There is an example of a Pull Quote on these two pages, its a quote from Lily herself it says "People think im an attention seeker, but im just honest" this itself shows she is trying to get her point across to the public and hopefully get them on her side than on her back, so shes trying to reduce the hate for her from the public. There are one or two english features in the title on this page, in the title there are speech marks because the title itself is something Lily has said, also the whole title is in capitals because the person who has wrote this wants people to take notice of that bit of important text more than anything else, so by putting the letters in capitals draws people in and makes them take notice. On the pages they did use baselines but only for the paragraphs and you can see this because the title and picture has been put differently and take up different amounts of room, but the paragraphs at the bottom are done neatly and have the same amount of rows and they all look the same coloum size.
My Conclusion: This double page spread did work very well, the double page tried to get Lilys point across and it did achieve this and the reason I say this is because of the way they used that picture of her very well to make it look like shes listening to the world. The peice made me feel like Lily was talking to me to get me to change my opinion about her. My opinion on this piece is its a very prusading piece of information because she is giving her opinion to the opinion of the public. Also this double page informed me of both sides of the storys and rumours that other people are saying about Lily. This NME double page is a lot different to the BBC music magazine and the reason i say this is because the NME one is jumping out at me and trying to get my attention where as the BBC one is dull and natural coulous showing the choir in its natural coulour. Also the layout between them both is different the BBC one has two different sections one for the picture and the other for the text part and this is a very clear and smart layout where as the NME one has half the two pages for the picture and the other half for the title and four paragraphs and this shoes that the image is more important than the text because the picture has loads of space and the text has to be pushed in.
BBC music magazine
The BBC music magazine is about classical music you can see this because it says about composers and also at the top of the magazine it says worlds best selling classical music magazine. The target audience for this issue of the magazine is people that are interested in classical music because judging by the cover all thats inside the magazine is about classical music.
The layout is very clear and easy to read,
you can see this because there is a big picture of the woman in the middle and by doing this it splits everything up on the cover, also the text on the page is split into little sections on there own and this makes it easyier to read. In this issue there is a use of white space and the white space is behind the photo and all the text this has been used like this because it makes the photo and text stand out a lot better when theres a plain background also there has been use of white space in the box with all the sub headings and this has been used to make the text stand out. There has been a few different types of Typography used in this cover the text at the very top is serif style and serif is font style that has little wings coming off the edge of each letter, and this font the writer has used does have little wings. The title on the cover is serif too because of the little wings the letters have, the rest of the rest of the text on the page is standard not serif stye ,all the writing is the same style but the font size is just made bigger and smaller on the basic information so that everything stands out on the page and it all looks professional. The hierarchy of the cover is trying to make you read downwards it makes you read like this by carrying on the sentences underneath each other like a ladder effect. The photography is quite nice on this cover photo. The women is wearing a very plain black jumper, she is wearing this because using a white background and then putting someone in black on top gives her more attention because she stands out really well and it catches the audience eye. She is making direct eye contact with the camera but she has like a smug on her face, while looking at the camera shows she knows she is good an looks very happy with what she has done. Her body language in this photo is really professional because she is standing wit a straight back like she is really quite formal and also you get the idea she takes what she does very serious, also she has one arm folded and the other arm is folded with her hand by her face, this gives the effect that she is quite shy in front of the cameras. The lighting on this photo is, really just aimed on her face to make the public concentrate on her face more than the rest of the cover because they want people to know who this women is and get everyone in the world, you can see this because the lighting in the background is not as bright as her face and also the black jumper is still really dull and if the jumper was lit up more more like her face then the jumper would be more detailed. The colour scheme on this cover is very plain. They have used a white and grey background these two colours are really plain together, so by putting black writing on top makes the writing stand out really well, also the photo on the plain background helps the photo to stand out more because of the black jumper she is wearing. These colours make me feel, happy with the brightness of the background and the black they have used make the bright colours stand out even more so I get this happy feeling There is some graphic Ornamentations on this cover there are a few boxes used. There is a box for the BBC logo to help it stand out, also there is a box in the top right corner and this is there because its giving you a little bit of information that could interest you and there is also a box near the bottom telling everyone what things are inside the magazine that could make you want this magazine, lastly there is one box on the bottom of the page in the left and corner showing you a CD cover that should be attached. This issue has included some Institutional Information it has a barcode in the bottom right hand corner and also there is a date this issue was released and also the price of this issue. The photo package on this cover is there is two images on the cover, one of them is the girl and the size of it is big because its the main photo and this issue mainly focuses on her, the other image on the cover is a small image telling people about a CD that should be attached to the issue and what it looks like. In this issue there is a connection between the image and some of the text, the text on the left hand side of the photo is telling us who the person is and what she is. The rest of the text on the cover is information on what is inside the magazine. There are no pull quotes used on this issue cover. There is no english features used in the title on this issue.
My Conclusion: The cover didnt really get the classical topic across to the public very well and I say this because there is only words and names of famous classical musians and it doesnt grab my attention also the picture of the woman in the middle doesnt push the classical idea and the reason is because shes just standing there, a better way they could have pushed the idea is there could be a picture of the woman playing the piano. This front cover made me feel happy because its very well lighted. This double page informed me a little about the picture but not enough to get me interested in the subject.
BBC music magazine double page spread
This double page spread of classical music is about, young people joining parish choirs all over the nation, the target audience for this double page spread is, for anyone who choir sings or anyone who likes choirs really because it talks about choirs mainly.
The layout on this double page is very spread out, the person that made this has a very good use of space. You can find where everything is on the page and nothing is mixed together. There is some use of white space on these two pages, at the bottom of the page where all the paragraphs are, this certain use of white space helps to make the paragraphs stand out and makes it very clear to read them. The Typography they have used on these two pages are very clear and easy to read styles, the title font style is non serif and they have used this because they want the title to stand out to people who are looking at these pages, the text underneith the title is non serif to but its a smaller font size so you can read it but it doesnt take the attention off the title, the paragraphed text at the bottom is non serif but again its a smaller text size so you can read it but it doesnt take the attention off any of the other text. The Hierarchy the designer wants to get across is for us to read left to right when looking at the magazine and you can see this because the picture is what you see first and you have to go to the right side to read the title and to find out what the picture is about, then under all of this the paragraphs and they start at the left hand side going to the right. The Photography of the picture is very good. The people in the pictures are all wearing choir robes and this is because they are all in a choir and its important they wear these to make them all look professional by all wearing the same as each other. In the two pictures no one is looking at the camara because they are all singing away and they havnt noticed the camara, its almost like they are all performing. They are all standing with straight backs so they can get in all the air they need to sing, also they have there heads down like they are reading the next line in their books they are holding. The lighting on the two pictures is very normal, its the light that is coming through the windows of the church and this gives a really good effect and feeling from it and the way its presented. They have used a very normal Colour Scheme you can see this because they are very plain colours and do not catch peoples eyes but it shows they havnt tried to make themselves eye catching but showed their true beauty and the true beauty of choir singing. There has been two uses of graphic Ornamentations and they are both boxes, one of the boxes is a guy who is the director of the choir and in the other box is a quote, these have been used because they want people to see these more than they want people to read the paragraphs, also they are just to stand out to people. On these two pages there has been hardly no use of Institutional Information, theres no barcode because its not a front cover, there is a bit of information saying what the two pictures are. This is at the bottom left of the photo of the choir. The Photo package on this double page spread? There is two images on here and the most important one is really big and takes up half of the page and the other is small because its just trying to support the text a bit. The text does relate to the picture in some ways because its about choirs but not about a certain choir that is in the picture. There is a use of a Pull Quote in the text and its in the box so it stands out, it says The routes into Anglican choral music for young people have changed dramatically. This does set the tone a bit because it doesnt say if its a good or bad point that its all changed. There is no use of English features in the title. They have used baseline grids on these pages, you can see this because all the paragraphs are the same length and height also nothing is out of proportion. They have used gutters between the paragraphs to space them out so you can read them easyly without getting muddled up or even get lines muddled up.
My Conclusion: In my opinion this piece worked well because it got the whole point of choirs across and the reason I say this is because the whole double page spread is about choirs and there is a lot of information about the history of the choirs. This piece made me feel bord and the reason I say this is because Im not really interested in choirs and also the colours they have used are all dull and boring, so nothing stands out and grabs my attention. It did inform me alot though about choirs, it has information about the history and some of the modern things about choirs.
